Project Smugglers: A Primary Bathroom Remodel

There is an interesting balance that comes with renovating a home you love, but know may not be your forever home.

You still want to walk into the space every day and feel like it reflects you. You want finishes you genuinely love, quality materials, and a design that makes the investment worthwhile. But somewhere in the back of your mind, you are also thinking about the next homeowner.

That was the design conversation behind Project Smugglers, a primary bathroom remodel by DuBois Design+Build.

For this project, our goal was to create a bathroom that felt personal to our clients without becoming so specific that it would feel dated or difficult for a future buyer to love. The result is a modern, refined primary bathroom that feels current today and has the staying power to look beautiful for years to come.

Designing for Yourself Without Ignoring Resale

We talk about this balance with homeowners all the time. Not every renovation needs to be designed around resale, and we certainly do not believe your home should be stripped of personality just because you might sell someday.

But when you know a move is likely in your future, it makes sense to be thoughtful about where you take risks.

For Project Smugglers, we focused on a palette that felt elevated and interesting without relying heavily on trends. The homeowners still had the opportunity to choose finishes they loved, but those choices worked together in a way that felt approachable, modern, and broadly appealing.

A Primary Bathroom That Feels Personal, Not Overdone

Bathrooms give you plenty of opportunities to bring personality into a home through tile, cabinetry, hardware, lighting, plumbing fixtures, and smaller details.

The key is knowing which elements should do the talking.

In Project Smugglers, we were intentional about creating enough visual interest to make the bathroom feel designed rather than simply updated. At the same time, we wanted the major finishes to have longevity.

That combination is what makes a renovation feel successful years later. You should not have to choose between a bathroom that feels like you and one that will still make sense to someone else down the road.

Where Quality Matters Most

When designing with longevity in mind, we look beyond color and style.

The layout needs to work. Materials need to make sense for a hardworking space. Lighting should be considered from the beginning. Fixtures should feel substantial. And all of those individual decisions need to work together rather than compete for attention.

Those are the details that often separate a bathroom that simply photographs well from one that actually feels good to use every morning.

Updating the Bathroom Without Losing the Character of the Home

One of the most important parts of Project Smugglers was knowing what not to change.

The existing bathroom had an outdated tub, vaninty, and finishes that were ready for an update, but the home itself had beautiful character we wanted to preserve. Natural wood around the window frames brings warmth and richness to the space, and rather than covering it up or trying to make everything feel brand new, we designed the new finishes to work with it.

We also introduced two sprawling windows around the tub, bringing significantly more natural light into the bathroom and completely changing the experience of the space. The natural wood, updated finishes, and abundance of daylight now feel like they were always meant to exist together.

And the tub became a moment. Surrounded by those expansive windows and flooded with natural light, the new tub area feels open, warm, and genuinely special. It is a great example of how a remodel can modernize a home without erasing the details that gave it character in the first place.

The Finished Project

Project Smugglers landed exactly where we wanted it to: somewhere between personal and universally beautiful.

The homeowners get to enjoy a primary bathroom that feels distinctly theirs right now, while knowing they made choices that should continue to serve the home well if and when it changes hands.

A thoughtfully designed home does not have to be completely neutral to have broad appeal. It just needs the right balance of personality, quality, restraint, and longevity.
