Introducing Project Hoosier: A Covered Porch Addition in Larkspur, Colorado

There's something pretty special about living in Colorado when your backyard is surrounded by towering pine trees and Gambel oak. The scenery changes throughout the year, and fall brings an especially beautiful mix of golden leaves, evergreens, and crisp mountain air.
For the homeowners of Project Hoosier in Larkspur, Colorado, we wanted to make that setting something they could enjoy even more.
Our latest project is a custom covered porch addition designed to expand the home's outdoor living space, complement its existing architecture, and give the family a comfortable place to take in the surrounding landscape.
And the timing couldn't have been better. We wrapped up construction just in time for the family to enjoy the last of this season's changing fall foliage.

A Covered Porch Inspired by Sandstone Canyon
One of our favorite parts of Project Hoosier is where the design inspiration came from.
The inspiration came from a beautiful open-air timber pavilion at Sandstone Canyon during one of David's runs while he prepared for a triathlon. With its substantial wood framing, exposed beams, and distinctive pitched roof, the structure has a rustic Colorado character that fits naturally into the landscape.
We used that pavilion as inspiration for the new porch, adapting its architectural details to fit the scale and style of the existing home.
The finished design features exposed timber beams, a beautiful tongue and grove pine ceiling, and an open gable roof that gives the porch a strong architectural presence. The darker wood framing creates contrast against the home's lighter stucco exterior, while the warm ceiling adds character overhead.
We especially love how the exposed structural elements become part of the design. Rather than covering everything up, the timber framing gives the porch its personality.
This is something we often explore in our design-build projects. Materials and architectural details can make a space feel custom without requiring an overly complicated design. We talk more about this approach in our blog, Creative Design Choices That Completely Change the Vibe of a Space.

Expanding Outdoor Living Space Without Losing the View
When designing a covered porch, one of the biggest considerations is how the new structure will interact with the existing home and the surrounding property. For Project Hoosier, the view was a major part of the appeal.
The property overlooks a beautiful mix of pine forest and Gambel oak, so we wanted to preserve that open connection to the outdoors. The timber posts support the roof while leaving the sides open, allowing the homeowners to enjoy the landscape from underneath the covered space.
The pitched roof also creates a sense of openness. Even with a substantial structure overhead, the porch feels spacious and connected to the backyard.
We love that the addition gives the family another place to spend time together without changing what makes their property special.
It's also a great example of how an addition can improve the way a home lives. Sometimes that means adding an interior room, but other times it means creating a more useful connection between the home and the outdoors. We explore that thinking further in What We'd Change in Your Home Before Adding Square Footage.

Why the Details Matter in a Custom Covered Porch
A covered porch may look relatively simple when it's finished, but getting the proportions and details right makes a significant difference.
For a structure like Project Hoosier, several design considerations are especially important.
A Roofline That Complements the Home
A porch addition should look like it belongs with the original architecture. The pitch, scale, and placement of the roof all affect how naturally the addition fits with the house.
For Project Hoosier, the gabled roof gives the porch a distinctive look while working with the existing home's exterior.
Timber Framing That Makes a Statement
The exposed beams are easily one of our favorite features. They bring depth and character to the porch, and the visible structure creates the mountain-inspired look that originally drew us to the Sandstone Canyon pavilion.
A Ceiling Worth Looking Up At
The wood ceiling is another detail that makes this addition feel special. Instead of a plain finished surface, the wood planking and exposed rafters add texture and warmth.
It's the kind of detail that makes the porch feel thoughtfully designed from every angle.
These choices reflect the same philosophy we discuss in The Luxury Home Upgrades Homeowners Never Regret. The features that make a home feel special are often the ones that improve the experience of using it every day.
