Design Trends That Won’t Age Well (And What to Do Instead)

Every year, new design trends take over Instagram, Pinterest, and home magazines. And every year, we sit down with homeowners who are excited about those ideas but also a little unsure.
The reality is this. Not every trend is a bad choice. But when design decisions are made based on what is popular right now instead of what will work long term, that is where regret shows up.
At DuBois Design+Build, we approach every project with the full picture in mind. Not just how it looks on day one, but how it will feel and function five, ten, even twenty years from now.
If you are planning a renovation, here are the design trends we would approach carefully and what we recommend instead.

1. Overly Busy Tile and Pattern Overload
Why it does not age well
Statement tile has its place, but we are seeing it used everywhere. Backsplashes, showers, floors, and even accent walls all competing for attention.
What feels artistic today can quickly feel chaotic. And once tile is installed, it is one of the hardest and most expensive things to change.
What to do instead
Use bold tile intentionally. Choose one area to stand out and let the rest of the space support it. Large format tiles, subtle textures, and natural tones tend to hold up much better over time.
If you are unsure, this is where working with a full design team early makes a major difference. We plan these moments so your home feels cohesive, not busy.

2. Ultra Open Shelving Kitchens
Why it does not age well
Open shelving looks clean and curated in photos. Real life is very different.
Dishes do not always match. Everyday clutter builds up fast. And suddenly the kitchen feels less like a calm space and more like constant maintenance.
What to do instead
We often recommend a balance. A few open shelves for personality paired with well-designed closed cabinetry for function.
This gives you the best of both worlds. Style where you want it and storage where you need it.
You can see how thoughtful kitchen decisions play out long term in this blog.

3. All White Everything
Why it does not age well
All white kitchens and interiors had a strong run. But without contrast, they can feel flat, cold, and overly sterile.
We are already seeing a shift toward warmer, more layered spaces.
What to do instead
Introduce depth through natural materials. Wood tones, soft neutrals, and subtle variation create a space that feels inviting and lived in.
This does not mean going dark or bold. It means creating balance.

4. Oversized Statement Lighting Without a Plan
Why it does not age well
Lighting trends move quickly, but scale mistakes do not go unnoticed. An oversized fixture that looked exciting online can feel overwhelming in person if it is not proportioned correctly.
What to do instead
Lighting should be designed as a system, not selected as a single feature.
We look at:
Ambient lighting for overall brightness
Task lighting for function
Accent lighting for depth and mood
When these layers work together, the space feels intentional instead of trend-driven.

5. Modern Farmhouse Done Literally
Why it does not age well
Shiplap everywhere. Barn doors in every room. High contrast black and white palettes.
This style became so popular that it is now one of the fastest to feel dated when overused.
What to do instead
Focus on the feeling you are drawn to, not the exact look.
If you like warmth and simplicity, we can achieve that through proportion, material choice, and thoughtful detailing without relying on trends that are already fading.

6. Matte Black Fixtures Everywhere
Why it does not age well
Matte black had a strong moment, but lower-quality finishes tend to show wear quickly. Scratches, fingerprints, and fading can become noticeable faster than expected.
What to do instead
Mix finishes intentionally. Incorporate warmer metals or softer tones that age gracefully. High-quality materials will always outperform trendy finishes.

7. Prioritizing Aesthetics Over Function
Why it does not age well
This is the biggest and most expensive mistake we see.
A kitchen that looks beautiful but does not function well. A bathroom that photographs nicely but lacks storage. A layout that does not support how a family actually lives.
Those issues do not just feel dated. They feel frustrating every single day.
What to do instead
Start with how the space works. Then design around it.
This is why we guide clients through both design and build. When decisions are made early and with intention, it avoids costly changes later.

The Bigger Picture: Trends Are Not the Problem
Trends are not inherently bad. In fact, they can bring personality and life into a home.
The problem is using them without a clear plan.
The homes that age the best are not the ones that avoided trends completely. They are the ones where trends were used thoughtfully, supported by strong design fundamentals.
That is where experience matters.
